Balcony Garden Update

It’s been almost 2 months since I first posted about my balcony garden. I figured it was time for an update on how things are going (err.. not going…).
Things I’ve Learned
Remember when I said that our balcony only gets a ‘partial’ amount of sun? Well, this is still true. But because it’s mostly direct sun for those few hours, the sunlight actually gets reflected off the walls, ceiling, and floor of the balcony. This makes […]

Chasing Waterfalls | Dundas Hikes

Though Hamilton is often heralded as the City of Waterfalls, Dundas has some pretty good ones too! These two Dundas hikes are great places to spend a morning or afternoon. Plus, there are incredible waterfalls! What more could you ask for?
Borer’s Falls
On a shared day off, two coworkers and I ventured out to Borer’s Falls Conservation Area. The car park for the trail head is at Valley Road & York Road – about 5 minutes west […]

CSA Box: Week 3

CSA Box #3 | November 9
The days are certainly getting shorter (not to mention it’s getting darker earlier! Thanks daylight savings…). It was a wee bit chilly (& very dark!) when I gathered my CSA Box this week, but the abundance of colours & produce certainly managed to brighten things a little!

Week 3 Haul:

Item Breakdown:

7 apples
1 bunch carrots
4 tomatoes
20 potatoes
1 head garlic
1 acorn squash
1 head cauliflower
1 bunch […]

Burlington Hikes: Smokey Hollow

Waterdown is a small down north of Burlington and is home to Smokey Hollow. Smokey Hollow was named in the 1800’s during the Industrial Revolution when mills dominated the area often creating plumes of smoke that would rise from the hollow of the valley.
Smokey Hollow Walk
Great Falls & The Bruce Trail
The waterfall that powered these mills – Great Falls – was the starting point for the hike that a co-worker and I recently did! The […]

Burlington Hikes: Kerncliff Park

On our road trip around New Zealand, I unearthed a new passion: hiking. I mean, it’s not really that surprising – NZ is absolutely bursting with extremely well-maintained trails and tracks so it’s almost impossible not to become totally enamoured with the sport of hiking. Now that we’re home, the outdoors are calling my name once again. The GTA may not be surrounded by snow-capped mountains or pristine & untouched lakes, but there are trails […]

CSA Recap: Week 1

For the past few years that I’ve been in Burlington, I’ve worked out a routine that allows me to support local farmers while still taking advantage of all the in-season produce. In the summer, I frequent the two farmers’ markets in the area and during the fall & winter months I sign up for a CSA Share. For those unfamiliar, CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. At the beginning of the season, you sign up […]

Date Day

As it always tends to happen in the summer, most weekends are booked up with cottage activities, road trips or vacations well in advance. So when it happened that M & I didn’t have any concrete plans for this past Civic Holiday long weekend, I jumped on the chance and organized a whole Date Day for just the two of us. Since M has been on a work rotation for the past year and a […]

Escaping the City

I woke up early on Saturday morning and went on a glorious walk downtown. It was so quiet and peaceful at the waterfront. Walking through downtown was an equally calming experience as many of the local shops were just starting to prep for what was sure to be a busy day for them.

When I got back I made Deliciously Ella’s 10 Minute Mango Pancakes for breakfast (recipe here). I served them with a bunch of local […]
