One Year
Wow. 1 year. 52 weeks. 365 days. 525,600 minutesssss (cue Rent song…). January 8th, 2016 marks exactly one year since Mac & I left the Great White North for Managua, Nicaragua and since then we’ve seen & done some pretty cool things. Here are some stats I put together to recap our year of travel!
By the Numbers
Number of Continents: 3 – North & South America, Oceania

Chile Overview & Where to Stay

Seventy seven. That’s the number of days that Mac & I spent in Chile. The most out of any other country so far! We did a bit of everything in this country and definitely tried to take advantage of all there was to offer! We spent a week cruising down the northern coast of the country before arriving in Valparaiso where we spent a month volunteering at a Bed & Breakfast. From there we had […]

Santiago Shake Ups

Santiago, Chile
After Valdivia, we headed to Santiago for a few days of downtime before our flight. Actually, we intended to go to Melipeuco to hike in the national park nearby, but upon arrival (after a convoluted series of bus rides totalling 5 hours), we learned that the park is actually extremely inaccessible in the winter. You can arrange tours, but transportation can cost up to $50 per person. Well, um, yeah, no thanks! After a […]

Forts, Mazes & Beer.

Niebla, Chile
From Chiloe, Mac & I had just over a week until our flight from Santiago to Auckland. To break up what would otherwise be a very long bus journey, we stopped in a city called Valdivia. Valdivia is surrounded by rivers with the ocean nearby. One popular destination near Valdivia is a small town called Niebla. It’s a fort known for its important role during the Spanish rule in the 1500’s. From Valdivia we […]

Hiking Chiloe National Park & More

Dalcahue, & Castro; Chiloe
Following our month in Lago Rupanco, we headed south to the island of Chiloe. The second largest island in Chile, Chiloe is part of an archipelago of islands on the coast of Chile. It’s also the last spot on the Pan American Highway. Additionally, this island would mark the furthest south that Mac and I have traveled to on this trip. At ~43deg, we were more or less equidistant from the equator […]

Big Trip Summary & Statistics: Month #8

Month #8 started off with us finishing up our volunteering job in Valparaiso. From Valpo, we made a pit stop in the lovely little town of Pucon. Though our time there was quite rainy, we got lucky with one clear day where we hiked in one of the most beautiful snow-filled parks I’ve ever seen. It was totally worth the lack of appropriate winter-attire and soaked socks & shoes!

From Pucon, we went right into our […]

Life on the Farm – Part III

Lago Rupanco, Chile
I’m going to use this post to highlight some of my favourite things from our time on the farm. Check out my other farm posts here and here.
I’m a pretty big fan of sunsets, and the ones we saw here on Lago Rupanco were pretty incredible. The best one of all was probably at the end of the first sunny day that followed the nine days of rain. A little sun can make […]

Life on the Farm – Part II

Lago Rupanco, Chile
I’m sure it’s easy to see from my previous post that this farm isn’t your typical farm. There are animals, but the main focus here is to create a permaculture system to provide for the nearby community and act as a retreat and learning center for those that want to visit. (I could do a whole post on permaculture itself, but if you’re not familiar with the concept, I’d recommend reading this article.)
Daily […]
